I know to a few of you this will seem a little gross or strange, but I’ll do anything I feel is necessary to heal/keep my body healthy. So yes, I drink bone broth to do so. Why do you think they say chicken soup is good for the soul?? Because of the bones of the chicken in the soup and all that it does for you! My twin sister Tara was surprisingly nice enough to make us both some homemade bone broth (which I only tried a little bit of because I don’t eat red meat).
For myself, I buy a chicken bone broth from the health food store that just requires you to add 1 cup of hot water and mix it in. The best thing about it is that its soy-free, my body does not do soy okay.
Bone broth contains a great amount of natural bioactive proteins, nutrients, key amino acids, and health-boosting vitamins and minerals. It also:
- Boosts immunity, which is very important because it’s flu season and I don’t believe in flu shots
- Improves digestion
- Heals the gut/improves gut health (so many things can go wrong if your gut isn’t healthy)
- Increases energy levels
- Promotes BEAUTIFUL skin, YOUR SKIN WILL GLOW because of bone broth’s rich collagen content
- Protects kidney function, which is one of they body’s most valuable organs
- I don’t know if y’all remember all the vitamins from my post I take my daily vitamins, DO YOU?! but I no longer take L-arginine because it is abundant in bone broth
- Protects the joints
Let’s get into the how to! How to make!
P.S. This is a looooooooong process but the benefits make it worth doing.
What you need
- 4 lbs beef bones
- 12 cups water
- 2 tbsp. apple cider vinegar (with the mother)
- 1 onion, diced
- 1 1/2 cups leeks
- 3 bay leaves
- 5 sprigs fresh rosemary
- 6 cloves garlic
- 3 big handfuls of kale
- 1 tbsp. black peppercorns
- Pre-heat the oven to 450º, and place the beef bones on a baking sheet and roast for 40 minutes.
- Once the bones are cooked, place them in a large pot, or crock pot, and cover with water and add the vinegar. Let it sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes.
- Chop and add all the vegetable ingredients and bring to a boil, and then lower to a simmer.
- For the first 2-3 hours scoop out the foamy layer that forms at the top of the broth.
- Continue to simmer (covered) for 48 hours, yes, TWO DAYS. I apologize in advance if you have an electric stove like we do, it hurt me to leave it on that long (I just invested in a crockpot so I won’t have to put myself through that again lol).
- After 48 hours, allow the broth to cool and strain.
- Transfer it to an air tight container, we used a huge mason jar, and refrigerate overnight.
- The fat in the broth will solidify and rise to the top, allowing you to be able to remove it all.
- When you are ready to drink your broth, warm the amount you wish to drink on the stove top.
- Enjoy and reap the benefits!
This jar was full yesterday, my sister already drank half lol.
