For My College Kids! How To Self Care Your Way Into A New School Year | Relax & Prepare Yourself

Well guys, its about that time. For us college folk, our first day of the fall semester is in T-minus TWO DAYS!! *grabs chest* I know school is always tough to come back to after you’ve just had a carefree summer, but don’t fret! I’ve been in school all summer, but I’ve had this past week to de-stress, relax, and get my mind right for my LAST fall semester of graduate school, thank you God. I only have two more semesters to go, so me earning my master’s degree is almost here.

Grad school is super stressful and demanding, and sometimes college can be too. It can literally feel like a full time job. So many lectures, homework everyday, tests. Your real responsibilities and the accompanying pressure, usually always always always begin on the first day. So with that being said, I have a few rituals that I wanted to share with you all that have helped to keep me sane, prepared, and successful.

How To Self Care Your Way Into The First Day of College

Of course when you wake up you need to do your morning routine, like brushing your teeth, washing your face, etc…

Eat Breakfast + Do Something Relaxing

img_4740The FIRST thing I do the morning before the first day is make myself a big filling healthy protein packed breakfast! + a cup of tea to go along with it. Never skip breakfast, it is the most important meal of the day. Breakfast is the moment when you literally ‘break the fast’. By the morning time, your energy levels are so low due to your body working overtime to repair itself while you sleep. Jump start your metabolism and fuel your body to get you ready to take on the day.

img_4741Once you’ve had breakfast, do something that calms and relaxes you. For some that can be binge watching their favorite Netflix series, listening to a podcast, journaling, reading a book, cleaning their living space, or taking a walk. It’s whatever you want to do! Me being an avid blogger I’ll sometimes read blogs or watch a health/wellness/fitness vlogger on YouTube (I watch/do yoga vids), or go to the park.

Now you’re ready to get active!

Me personally, before school I don’t like to sit in the house all day, it keeps my energy levels low and I won’t be motivated for the upcoming school day. So my advice is to..

Go somewhere. I am probably one of the most avid health food thrift shoppers there is. I love love love going to TJ Maxx, Ross, Marshall’s, Home Goods, all of it. So that’s definitely my go to. I find it very therapeutic. There are so many things that you can do, but do whatever makes YOU happy. You’ll feel way better if you’re up and moving, don’t sit in the house all day.

A few ideas:

  • get a juice or smoothie
  • get your car washed, it’s something about have a fresh car wash before school that makes it all better
  • go see a movie
  • go shopping
  • go buy school supplies
  • go stock up on groceries so you can prep for the week

After you complete any of those tasks, it’s time for lunch/brunch.

Go treat yourself to a nice lunch. *If you went to make groceries, don’t forget to take them home first.* You can either go alone, or invite your friends. I prefer going to lunch with my friends because I look forward to the conversation. Laughing is good for the soul, and there’s nothing better than to be able to speak on what you need to, your friends can always be a listening ear. And if you’re of age, having a drink with your friends is nice too.

Take Care of Your Body!

After lunch has settled, I’m headed straight to the gym. This is where a helpful tip comes in… ALWAYS LEAVE YOUR GYM BAG IN YOUR CAR WITH A PAIR OF WORKOUT CLOTHES ALREADY PACKED! Working out is a great, if not the best, stress reliever. I have a membership at planet fitness. This is one of the most affordable memberships you’ll find. Sometimes its more convenient for me to go the planet than the campus rec.

Come Home & De-Stress.

img_4746Usually after the gym, I’ll just come home and shower. But the night before school, I like to take a nice hot, relaxing, aromatherapy filled, detox bath. Detox baths pull the toxins from your body, balances your body’s PH, reduces stress, relieves sore muscles, and improves sleep.

What to add to your detox bath:

  • Dr. Teals bubble bath
  • Dr. Teals Epsom salt
  • 10 drops lavender, lavender is known for is calming effects!
  • 5 drops lemongrass
  • 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar

Other additional (optional) add-ins:

  • bath bombs
  • bath oils, vitamin E oil is my favorite

Detox your first day of school stress away!

Now it’s time for a nice dinner.

I’ll go and buy lunch, but dinner is something I like to make the night before school. I thoroughly enjoy cooking, because I’m really good at it, and it allows me to take whatever is left to school the next day to have for lunch.

The night before school I’m always sure to make a dinner that includes brain supporting foods. Omega-3’s help improve general brain function and restore memory.

Brain supporting foods:

  • salmon
  • avocados
  • extra virgin olive oil
  • coconut oil
  • dark leafy greens
  • beans

All those foods can be made together. You can make a nice healthy salad, or a nice salmon dinner; Cooking the greens and salmon in the oils, or drizzling the oils on top. If you want a simpler option, fish tacos are ALWAYS a go.

Get everything organized and ready!

To have a peaceful morning the day of school, it’s best you get everything organized and ready to go the night before. So you can just wake up, do your morning hygiene routine, get dressed, eat breakfast, grab your stuff, and go.img_4751

Get your bag ready, print out notes that your professors will be speaking on the first day, lay out your clothes, set an alarm.

Set the mood + Get Comfy

Light some aromatherapy candles. Play some soft music. Read a book. Watch one of your favorite childhood movies (I’ll be watching Hercules of course). Have a nice hot cup of tea. Put a calming/sleepy blend in your diffuser. Whatever will help you to have a sweet slumber. Do your best to try and get a full night’s rest!

ZZZZZZzzzzzzz

Wake up the next morning ready to take on the day!

I wish everyone nothing but academic success this year!

For all the incoming freshmen, I know this is an exciting time for you. You’re about to experience what I believe to be, one of the BEST experiences of your life. I have so many college memories that I will cherish forever and met some amazing people. My best piece of advice is to stay head strong, look into joining organizations (they have so many there is definitely one just for you), be involved in events on campus, make new friends (those who know how to have fun, but can also stay out of trouble), and most importantly, BE YOU, peer pressure is real… you’ll understand exactly what I mean once you get there.

Peace + blessings everyone! ♥
